Major Victory for Bronx Air

After years of protests and lawsuits, Bronx residents finally win a fight to get the city to end its contract with the New York Organic Fertilizer Company. The company was found to significantly contribute to poor air quality in an area with the highest rates of asthma in all five boroughs.

From the NY Times article, “Some compare the smell to a filthy toilet, others to rotting meat; but everyone agrees that the stench comes from behind the gates of the New York Organic Fertilizer Company. The company’s Hunts Point plant processes sludge from 14 of the city’s sewage plants, amounting to nearly half of the city’s waste, and converts it into high-grade fertilizer pellets.”
